COROWA'S Focus Engineering and
Construction has been honoured
for its role in creating a stunning
footbridge over Melbourne's Yarra
The arched Seafarer's Bridge, which opened
last year and spans the Yarra River from the
Melbourne Convention Centre to Northbank,
was awarded the blue ribbon Judges' Special
Award by peak industry body Australian Steel
Institute at a gala event at Melbourne's Crown
Palladium in August.
The Corowa fabricator together with
Melbourne's Grimshaw Architects were named
ahead of 51 other contenders for the award.
Judges praised the difficulty in building the
bridge and maintaining water traffic, the 100-
year longevity of the bridge, that will prepare
it for tidal changes and global warming, and
the selection of materials in a highly corrosive
Focus construction manager Rod Campbell
said the degree of difficulty in the project was
"huge" with 15 workers involved in the project.
"It was a very complex fabrication due to the
structure of the arches, being able to fabricate them
so they were transportable," Mr Campbell said.
"It also required a high-quality paint finish
because of the corrosive it was going to be in.
"It's great recognition for us from our peers,
we have done bigger bridges but to be involved
with an iconic bridge in Melbourne is a great
result for a firm from a small town like Corowa."
Focus was supplied the materials by Albury
Metaland and assisted by Border firms Interlloy
and Albury Precision Engineering.
The name Seafarers Bridge was endorsed by
the city's council to reflect Melbourne's maritime
history after it received more than 500 name
"Seafarers Bridge is a wonderful outcome,"
acting Lord Mayor Susan Riley said.
