FOR 30 years Wilson
Transformers has worked
to position itself as an
employer of choice in
General manager Jon Retford
said the company's investments in
the community and its staff ensured
it could continue to employ the
right people for the jobs it offers.
Mr Retford said there was
growing recognition of the need
for major employers to support
initiatives such as the Border
Medical Recruitment Taskforce
if they were to ensure the region
would continue to offer the services
new and existing employees
included among essential criteria.
"We don't compete with any
other business in this community in
the traditional sense but as a major
manufacturer we compete for the
employment of good people," he
"Three years ago when there was
a skills and labour shortage in this
region we worked hard to attract
and support our employees."
Mr Retford said when employees
were choosing to relocate or remain
in the region, they looked to services
including education and health.
"If we don't have those services
they won't come; but it's not just
attracting the new people here:
keeping the people we have is also
important," he said.
Border Medical Recruitment
Taskforce project manager Denise
Klemm said four years after the
taskforce's creation, it was being
relaunched to raise additional funds
for its ongoing work.
The initial campaign wooed more
than 50 professionals and secured
about $700,000 in funding from
public and private donors.
"We are in a better position than
where we were four years ago: we
are not at the end of the road," Ms
"This is a consolidation. When
we began we had urgent holes
to fill, we still have holes to fill but
we are working hard to develop a
sustainable medical population."
Ms Klemm said Mr Retford
was among several employers
who recognised the benefit of the
taskforce's work in that they could
recruit excellent staff as a result of
being assured the region could offer
the appropriate medical services.
"In terms of the principle
behind the recruitment taskforce
it is obvious that we have to do
something to support that," Mr
"As a company we are discussing
the best way we can do that."
Vol 4. Autumn/Winter
