Describe your business / how did it start?
"We purchased it on December 18, 2007,"
Estelle McGrath said. "Tom was a school
teacher and decided he needed a career
change and a new challenge."
Which family members are in the team?
"Tom and myself."
3. How long have you worked together?
"Almost three years. When we purchased
the business Tom ran it while I continued
to work as an accountant. After 18
months I resigned from my job and started
working with Tom in the business."
How do you complement each other / what
are your particular skills?
"Tom runs the business -I think we had
to decide that from the start. It is too
confusing for staff and reps if you don't
have one boss. I'm a casual staff member
and do all the bookwork."
What are the advantages of working
"We get to see each other. Sometimes
we are busy with three boys and outside
interests out of work hours that work is
a chance to catch up. With school aged
children we can juggle work and spending
time with the boys in the school holidays.
It also provides flexibility - we can cover
for each other if necessary.
What, if any, is the downside?
"Conflict - if we don't agree on certain
issues we have to make sure we agree to
Holidays - we find it more difficult to get
away but think that it is important that we
do make time to get away."
How do you keep business and family life
"We try not to discuss work at home and
home life at work."
Tips for continuing success?
"Trying new ideas and ventures is
important. Currently we are in the process
of shutting down our clearance centre in
Swift Street and opening a Forty Winks
store in Wangaratta."
Where do you see yourself/selves in 10
"Tom will most likely be doing the same
but working three days a week and I'll
probably be doing the same!"
Would you recommend family partnerships
"Yes -- if you can keep work separate from
family. I also think it is important to have
some other individual interests outside of
