AUSTRALIA is experiencing a rapid ageing
of the population leading directly to an
ageing workforce which, in turn, will require
an unprecedented generational change in
The median age of an Australian in 1976
was 28.3 compared to 36.4 today and
in a decade it will be 40.1. Nowhere are
the implications more significant than in
employment. Over the next 15 years this
huge generation will all sail past 60 and ease
out of the workforce creating a significant
labour and management challenge.
Now is the time to begin the succession
planning in businesses of all sizes.
The Albury Northside and Wodonga
Chambers of Commerce Young Business
Edge is an initiative aimed at business and
professional people under the age of 40,
across all industry sectors and all positions
in the Albury-Wodonga region.
Young Business Edge aims to extend the
level of support offered to local young
professional and businesses to reach further
into the community by helping to build skills,
establish careers and ultimately develop the
financial and economic future of this region.
The group has frequent events for members
to network with like-minded business
people, build alliances and act as a support
mechanism. It is also an opportunity to
engage new people in the region and
connect them with locals and widen their
knowledge of the region and everything it
has to offer .
In its inaugural year Young Business Edge
hosted guest speakers Brad Smith, whose
company Braaap recently won the Australian
Retail Business of the Year at the Australian
Business Champion Awards; and Tom
Potter, founder of Eagle Boys Pizza, the

In the last year monthly informal events
have been established which have seen a
steady increase in attendance numbers.
These events have been supported by
annual partners in Star FM, Commonwealth
Bank, Regional Law Society and La Trobe
